“Our intention is to produce every season performances of high dramaturgic value on a specific topic. We aim at increasing the aesthetic level of our repertoire all the while keeping in mind audience’s interest. Our goal is, as Chekhov said: “May not Gogol descend to the people, but may people rise to Gogol”. I don’t think that in the theatre a good product is the one that is not understandable. A good product is the one that can change the audience through its art, can delight it, make it twinkling, thinking, feeling; that poses questions and opens alternative life perspectives”.
Tonight in theatre “Vazrajdane” the actors will be so close to you that you will be able to recognize the label of their perfumes, you will be able to see how hard their day was by the look of their faces, their eyes will tell you whether they cheat their partners or not.
In other words, tonight in theatre “Vazrajdane” the actors will be so close to you that they will lead you along the way and before you know it, you will become part of the great mystery called Theatre.
You will come here as a spectator and leave as a friend!
I am an actress. In the most interesting theater in Sofia. This is not just my opinion, but the opinion of the audience too. And this theatre is not only interesting. There is a magnificent company of actors in it and they work with the best Bulgarian directors. It is a small theatre indeed, but the carefully selected dramaturgy among the best models in the world, the guest performances of talented designers, choreographers, composers and the efforts of all that take part in the realization of the performances turn the small theater “Vazrajdane” with a Theatre with capital “T”.
The fact that I was a managing director of theatre “Vazrajdane” just made my ambition to increase its level stronger.
The post of a managing director is not a vocation of an actress. I am a member of something like a secret society of people and every night we stand in front of other people that have to be won, affiliated, touched. The people like me – I know them well. They are artists till the end. They fight for their existence and for the theatre they are devoted to. They are eager to work non stop, to be recognized, to be remembered, to be appreciated.
They are not always nice people. They have their moments of weakness and betrayals. But they are part of the Brotherhood. They are part of me. And I love them. I don’t know why, but a thought occurred in my mind – “The art is like a cross. And sufferings on this cross get the man closer to God”. This thought is not mine. I quote Charles Pierre Baudelaire.
The model “Municipal Theatre” is current and it works. This is not a Bulgarian invention but a practice all over the world. Comédie-Française in Paris, Burgtheater in Wien, the National Theatre “Ivan Vazov” in Sofia – these are national cultural institutions and that is why they are fully financially supported by the State. Municipal Theatres. They are supported by the Municipality. They have a large audience, they grip the attention of the theater critics, they win international awards.
My kingdom is Theatre “Vazrajdane”. I was its managing director for 11 years. I fought for it, I fought to keep it from the attacks of hatred and envy. I employed in the theatre, I raised and I presented to the theatrical community more than ten young actors, unknown until then. Today their names are well known.
